Our Nation’s Crucible Moment

Those that know me also know I don’t usually jump into political discussions but extraordinary events warrant that I do this time.

We are experiencing a crucible moment in the US. It has been a difficult couple of years which has tested the solidity of the foundation that we’ve built. Everything that we are as a nation is born of the values we have developed and refined over the last 250 years. No we are not perfect — not by any measure — and, no it has not been an easy road. But the increasingly hateful, racist, xenophobic rhetoric of this electoral campaign has brought out the worst in us; brought hateful speech that was only a whisper (or a dog whistle) into the mainstream. It threatens to permanently and negatively imprint itself not only on our national consciousness, but also onto future campaigns and generations to come. Honestly, for the first time, it has me frightened for what we will become as a nation.

So enough now.

My ask to you is simple — don’t let it. If you believe that our values should not be cast aside so glibly, even in the face of LEGITIMATE fear, then speak up. The “Silent Majority” can’t stay silent on this one. I for one refuse to any longer

This Time Is Different

Now is a time for me to be unusually forthcoming. Not because I’m angry. But because an article I read this week has been haunting me ever since I read it.

First, read the article.

Having to actively project the polar opposite of your stereotype is exhausting. Having to curtail your actions so others will feel safe – don’t be too loud, don’t make eye contact, don’t make sudden movements. It’s like walking around in your own personal cage every day. But I, like so many of my friends and family members, have to do this to be accepted in the “places we frequent”.

Some would say, you don’t have to do that. Be yourself. I am myself. I’m not a menace. I’m not violent. I’m one of the most rule abiding people I know (sometimes to my own detriment). But I’ve been through enough experiences in life to know that what people see isn’t necessarily what’s there.

It feels different this time.

Maybe because I know to continue to progress in my career and in my life, I will have to step out of that cage. I will have to break some of those ‘rules’. And frankly, it’s frightening. This cage has been pretty safe up until now. I guess writing this is the first step.

To be continued …

Confession Of A Fanboy

This is not a post about how Apple is slipping since Steve Jobs. What I will say is that in the past two years the game has changed for Apple. My proof: the number of apps from Cupertino that have now been replaced by – gasp – Google apps on my iPhone (picture below). Say it ain’t so Joe.

And now with Mailbox, Haze and Tempo, even more apps are under threat (email, weather, calendar). Beginning of the end? Not quite. I’ll probably still buy the next iPhone. But I won’t lie, that new HTC One looks INCREDIBLE …

And So It Begins …

What’s New Years Eve without a good dose of bubbly? Figured I’d buy a few extra bottles because, you know, you never know (yes, that is 4 rows deep). Happy Holidays!

Goodbye Boy

Always sad saying goodbye to an old family friend. Comforted that we got to see him one last time. #Fluffy

Another Divine Culinary Experience

So today I’m blogging from The Stanton Social. For those Food Network fans out there, this place was featured on ‘The Best Thing I Ever Ate’ in part because of their french onion soup dumplings. Yeah, you read that right. Looking forward to the culinary journey under the guidance of celebrity chef and ‘Chopped’ judge Chris Santos.
